Youth Services Activities July and August 2010

Tuesdays:

Story Time

Story Time is on Tuesdays and Fridays at 10:30 am. The program is appropriate for children birth to five years. We read stories and sing children's songs. There is no requirement to register ahead of time, come and join us!

We will be making slime out of Borax, glue, and water on Tuesday, July 6th at 2:00. The program is open to children in grades 2 and above.

The Coastal Explorer Van will visit from 10:00 to 3:00 on July 13. The van has numerous exhibits and hands-on information about coastal biology. The program is appropriate for all ages.

Recycled Jewelry. On July 20th at 2:00 we will make recycled jewlery! This program is most appropriate for children ages 8 and above, but younger children are welcome.

Recycled Craft: T-Shirt Tote Bag. On August 3rd at 2:00 we will make tote bags out of old t-shirts! Bring a favorite t-shirt that doesn't fit any more, or use one of the t-shirts we will have at the library. These t-shirt bags make perfect book bags! This program is most appropriate for children in grades 3 and above, but younger children are welcome if a parent is present to help them with their project.

Wednesdays:

Creative Movement and Movin' and Groovin' This popular program is held on Wednesday at 11:15. On the first and third Wednesday Diane Lando will lead young children and toddlers in singing and dancing. On the second and fourth Wednesday, Lisa Canto leads the preschoolers in learning about rhythm. All are welcome, no registration is required.

On July 7th at 3:00 Big Ryan will visit the library to tell stories. Ranging from goofy to witty to just-slightly-but-not-very scary, the stories are appropriate for all ages.

July 21st at 3:30 we will feature the Creature Teachers. This exotic animal program includes live animals! It is appropriate for all ages.

Mother Goose on the Loose will appear on August 4th at 3:00. A program with singing and story telling, the event is most approriate for young children.

Thursdays:

On July 1st at 2:00 we will have an interactive presentation about Dinosaurs! This program is most appropriate for preschoolers through grade 3, but all ages are welcome.

The Go Green! Mime Show! will be presented on July 8th at 2:00. This hilarious show features the most dynamic mime you will ever see - this is not a typical boring mime show.

Barn Babies will be coming to the library on July 15th at 2:00 and 2:30. This program requires pre-registration. Call Ann at 508-430-7562 to register for the program. We expect the list to fill up fast, so call soon!

July 22nd at 11:00 we will be hosting Wingmasters! This educational program features live birds of prey! The program is most appropriate for school aged children and adults, but all are welcome.

July 29th at 3:30 we will have a Butterly Program. Children will learn about butterflies, and then make a butterfly t-shirt. Bring your own shirt, or purchase one from the presenter. This program is most appropriate for school-aged children.

Read to Dogs! On August 5th at 2:00 there will be live dogs in the library, just waiting to have stories read to them. These are trained dogs from the Companion Animal Program, please do not bring your own dog. This program is appropriate for all ages. If the child is unable to read, a parent is invited to read a picture book to both the dog and the child.

Writer's Club will be run by Marjorie Frith. She is planning to engage the children with writing challenges and workshops on improving creative writing. Children are encouraged to bring a completed story to their first workshop.

The Mother Daughter Book Club meets on the second Thursday of each month at 5:00. We read 1-2 books each month on our own, and then get together at the library to discuss the books while eating snacks. At the end of the meeting the members - both mothers and daughters - vote on what we should read next. The Book Club is intended for students in grades 5-8, but feel free to talk to Ann the Librarian if you are outside that range and would like to join. Also, if a girl would like to join but her mother is working or otherwise unable to attend, she can certainly come alone, or bring another friend or family member.

Fridays:

July 16 at 2:00 we will have a Magic Show! This fun and exciting program is appropriate for all ages.

Personalize your own lightswitch on July 23rd at 2:00. We will decorate light switches that can be hung on any standard light switch fixture. This program is most appropriate for children in grades 3 and up.

July 30 at 2:00 we will have a Henna Program. After talking about henna designs, we will apply the plant-based dye. This creates a temporary skin design whihc will last for two to three weeks. Signed parental permission is required to receive a henna design. This program is intended for children in grades 3 and above, but all are welcome.

On August 6 we will host the Cape Cod African Drummers and Dancers! If the weather is nice, we will hold this program outside at Brooks Park. The ensemble includes both dancers and drummers and is highly interactive. This program is appropriate for all ages.

In lieu of Story Time on August 13 we will have Pitter Patter Puppets. A fantastic program for young children, the puppet show is funny and educational. This program is intended for children from toddlers to first grade, but all are welcome.

Saturdays:

On July 17th at 2:00 we will make plastic tote bags out of recycled materials. These waterproof bags are perfect for carrying library books! This program is intended for children in fourth grade and up. Younger children are happily welcomed if a parent is willing to assist them with their project.

Mad Science will be coming to the library on July 24th at 2:00.This high-energy, very interactive program teaches kids about science through incredibly entertaining programming.
