The library is offering curbside pickup of books, movies, audiobooks, and other Brooks Free Library materials. For now, we can only fill holds placed on items that are in the Brooks Free Library’s collection. The statewide delivery service between libraries has not yet resumed, which means ILL and ComCat is also unavailable. But don’t despair, plans are in place for resumption of this service, so please stay tuned for more good news in weeks to come! In the meantime, we’ve got you covered.
To get started, we have reopened the book drop for library returns only. Please no donations at this time. If you have items to return that do not fit in the book drop, there will be a bin in front of the book drop for those over-sized items. This bin will only be available from 9 am-4 pm Monday through Friday. For your safety, please do not remove items from this bin. Again, if you cannot return items please don’t worry about fines! All due dates have been extended and fines are being waived. However, if you need to make room at home for new library items the book drop is ready!
Time is considered to be the most effective disinfectant of library materials so all returned items are being quarantined for at least 3 days before being checked in to be re-shelved or recirculated. So don’t be surprised if you still see them checked out on your account for a few days after it is returned. And again, don’t worry, you won’t accrue any fines. CLAMS libraries have agreed to continue waiving fines during the pandemic.
You can place new requests for library materials through your account at clamsnet.org. To get started, sign in to the CLAMS online catalog using your library card barcode and PIN number. Search for an item, and limit your search to items available at Harwich (Brooks Free Library) by using the filter bar on the left. When you find what you want just click Request It and double-check that the pick up location is set to Harwich!
If you are unable to use the online catalog, or do not have specific titles in mind, but would still like to schedule a pickup, call us at 508-430-7562 ext. 1. We are available to answer calls Monday through Friday between 10 am – 4 pm. If you don’t get us on the first try, please leave a message and we will call you back as soon as we can.
If you would like to place requests using the online catalog but are unsure of your PIN number, please contact us and we can help you reset your PIN.
Requests will be filled in the order in which they were received. Because of our reduced schedule, you may need to wait a number of days before you receive your items. Staff will call you to schedule a time frame for you to pick up your items. Please wait for us to call you to schedule a pickup before coming to the Library. We will not be able to fill unscheduled requests.
Curbside service will be available several days a week and we will provide a variety of morning, afternoon, and evening hours to accommodate as many schedules as possible. Your safety and the safety of our staff are paramount! We are taking all the required precautions to ensure your materials are safe to pick up. All curbside and building staff will be following social distancing and hygiene protocols and will be wearing masks. Library materials will have been quarantined for the time period recommended by the CDC.
More detailed instructions on the pickup process will be given when staff call to schedule your pickup time. But to give you an idea of how this will work, your items will be placed on a table near the Library’s parking lot entrance in a bag clearly labeled with your name. A one-way flow of foot traffic will be established and waiting “spots” will be designated on the sidewalk to ensure adequate social distancing.
Please note: All library patrons MUST wear a mask during pickup.
Other libraries on the Cape will also be providing limited services in the weeks ahead. What each library can offer is dependent on local approval, library staffing, building configuration, and other factors. Please check with other libraries to learn what services they may be offering. Check this post from CLAMS for details, https://info.clamsnet.org/many-clams-libraries-begin-offering-curbside-service/

The Friends of Brooks Free Library has resumed offering their Books on Wheels service. This service provides contactless home delivery of library materials to library patrons in Harwich.
This program relies entirely on volunteers and service capacity is limited. We ask that you please only request Books on Wheels delivery if circumstances make it difficult for you or a family member to pick up your library materials.
If you would like more information on this service, you may call us at 508-430-7562 ext.1 or send an email to email@example.com
Although we may not be able to offer programs like book groups and storytimes in person these days, we can still meet to discuss books and enjoy each other’s company! Our virtual event calendar is live on our website and can be found here.
So in conclusion, here are the highlights.
- The book drop is open. (For library returns only, please no donations at this time)
